Why does my boiler stop working in cold weather?

Every condensing boiler — which is every boiler legally installed in the UK since 2005 — produces a small amount of acidic waste water as it runs, and drains it away through a plastic condensate pipe. On many London properties, older ones especially, that pipe is routed outside through an external wall rather than into an internal drain, which is exactly the arrangement that freezes solid on a cold night and stops the boiler dead the next morning, and it is one of the most common winter call-outs our emergency plumbing team handles across London.

Why this specifically happens in cold snaps

Standing water left in the pipe after the boiler last ran freezes and blocks it completely. The safe way to check

Look for the boiler’s external condensate pipe — usually a white or grey plastic pipe running down an outside wall, sometimes ending a short distance above the ground or into a drain. If part of it has visible ice, or the boiler display shows a condensate-related fault, that is very likely the cause.

Thawing it out

Pour warm, not boiling, water over the frozen section of pipe, working from the end nearest the ground upward. Boiling water can crack the plastic pipe or the fitting, which turns a five-minute fix into a proper repair. Once the ice has cleared, reset the boiler following the instructions on the casing. It is common and normal for this to solve the problem completely.

When not to attempt it yourself

If the frozen section is inside a wall cavity or otherwise not reachable, if the pipe has visibly cracked, or if the boiler will not reset even once the pipe is clear, it is time to call rather than keep trying — that points to a fault beyond a simple freeze. Treat a boiler that will not restart in genuinely cold weather as an emergency rather than something to leave overnight, particularly in a let property. Stopping it happening again

Pipe insulation (lagging) around the external run is a cheap, one-off job that prevents most repeat freezes, and in exposed spots an engineer can sometimes reroute the pipe to drain internally instead.
