Dishwasher plumbing in London

A dishwasher needs a cold feed, an isolating valve and a waste connection with an air break. Most of the callouts we get are about the last one: a waste hose fitted without a high loop, which lets sink water back into the machine or lets the machine empty itself as it fills.

Before you call

Worth knowing first

Some of this may save you a callout entirely. We would rather tell you than not.

The waste is where they go wrong

The drain hose needs a high loop above the machine before it drops to the trap. Without it, dirty water from the sink can run back into the dishwasher, or the machine siphons itself empty and never washes properly.

Integrated units need the opening right

Built-in machines have very little tolerance, and the services have to sit in the void behind rather than where the machine goes. If the kitchen is being fitted, get the pipework placed before the units go in.

It should have its own isolating valve

A small valve on the cold feed means the machine can be pulled out or swapped without draining anything. Every dishwasher should have one and a surprising number do not.

Standing water is not always a blockage

Water left in the bottom can be a blocked filter, a kinked hose or the waste connection rather than the drain itself. Worth checking the cheap things first — we will tell you how before booking a visit.

Questions

Common questions

Can you fit an integrated dishwasher?

Yes, including fitting the decor door where the hinges and template allow. Send us the model and the opening size and we can tell you what is involved.

Why will my dishwasher not drain?

Most often the filter or the waste hose rather than the machine. If the sink also drains slowly, the problem is the shared waste and that is a drain job rather than an appliance one.

Can it share a waste with the sink?

Yes, that is the normal arrangement — into a spigot on the sink trap, with the high loop above it. What it should never do is discharge below the water line in the trap.

Do you supply the machine?

No. Buy the machine wherever it is cheapest and we will plumb it in — that usually works out better for you than an appliance supplied through a trade markup.
