Split or multi-split depends on the rooms, not just the budget
One room is a straightforward split system. Several rooms can often share one outdoor condenser as a multi-split, which is tidier and usually cheaper than separate systems — provided the outdoor unit has somewhere sensible to go and the pipe runs are realistic.
Where the outdoor unit goes is usually the real decision
It needs airflow around it, a sensible route for the pipework and drain back inside, and in a flat or a conservation area it may need the freeholder’s or the council’s consent. Worth checking before the indoor unit is chosen.
Condensate has to go somewhere planned
Every indoor unit produces water as it cools. That needs a proper drain route, not a pipe left dripping onto a flat roof or a neighbour’s wall. It is decided at installation, not fixed afterwards.
F-Gas registration is not optional
Installing, servicing or decommissioning a system that uses refrigerant is regulated work, and only F-Gas registered engineers are legally permitted to handle the refrigerant side of it. Ask to see the certification — it is a fair question and we are glad to show it.

Do I need planning permission for an outdoor unit?
Usually not for a house, though flats, listed buildings and conservation areas can need consent for where the outdoor unit sits. We will tell you if that applies before booking a survey.
How many rooms can one outdoor unit cool?
A multi-split typically runs two to five indoor units off one outdoor condenser, depending on the make and the combined capacity needed. We size it to the rooms rather than fit whatever is on the van.
Is the installation certified?
Refrigerant work is carried out by F-Gas registered engineers, which is a legal requirement, not an optional extra. We can show the certification on request.
Do you also maintain the system after installation?
